how to set up a turntable properly

Some turntables arrive ready to play while others need careful adjustment, so how do you know which setup jobs are really yours?

Turntable setup has acquired an absurd reputation. One person tells you to fit the platter, drop the needle and enjoy yourself. The next arrives with digital scales, an alignment protractor and the nervous concentration of somebody defusing a bomb. Both are right, because decks leave their factories at wildly different stages of completion, and the whole argument only makes sense once you know which kind you have bought.

The rule underneath it is short: do every adjustment your deck actually requires, and none that it does not. A Rega Planar 3 RS arrives with its Nd5 cartridge fitted at the factory, and an Audio-Technica AT-LP60XBT has one you could not remove if you tried. Neither needs aligning, and a protractor bought for either is a protractor wasted. Other decks arrive half-built on purpose and want the counterweight fitted, the arm balanced and the tracking force set before a record goes near them. Work out which you have first, because the expensive mistakes nearly all happen to people adjusting something that was already correct.

first find out what the factory already did

Start with the deck's own setup page rather than a video of somebody else's, and read it for a short list of answers: is the cartridge fitted, does it come off, is tracking force preset, is bias automatic, did the headshell arrive aligned. Anything the maker has already set is finished. A counterweight can look adjustable while being designed to sit in exactly one place.

Cartridges come three ways and the difference decides half the work. Some are fitted and adjustable, like the factory-fitted N1 on a Clearaudio Compass; some are fitted and cannot be moved at all, as with the AT-LP70XBT's non-removable AT-VM95C or the AT3600L built into the arm of an AT-LP60XBT; and some decks arrive with no cartridge, which is the one case where mounting and alignment are genuinely yours.

Transit hardware is the other thing to get right early. Remove only the screws, blocks, ties and locks the maker identifies, in the order given, and resist the assumption that every visible screw is packaging. Keep the pieces with the box, because the next time the deck moves you will want them back.

the deck hears your floor before it hears the record

A cartridge reads movement measured in microns and has no way of telling yours from the record's, so a springy floor, a speaker sharing its shelf or a rack that rocks when anyone leans on it all arrive at the stylus looking very much like music, which is why setup advice that opens with the tonearm is back to front. The best-aligned cartridge in the world cannot ignore a bouncing floorboard.

Stand the deck on something rigid that does not rock, keep the speakers off the same furniture and give it some distance from them, because if footsteps make the stylus skip or the sound swells and howls as the volume rises, that's vibration reaching the cartridge and no adjustment on the arm will cure it. On a lively floor a wall shelf beats anything that stands on the ground.

Then level the plinth both ways with the platter on, using the feet where the deck has adjustable ones and the furniture where it does not, and fit the sub-platter, platter, mat and belt exactly as shown with the belt flat and no twist in it. Never oil a bearing unless the maker says how.

set the arm, and only the parts of it that move

Balance an arm only where the instructions ask you to. With the deck off, anti-skate at its stated setup position and a hand ready to catch the headshell, release the arm and turn the counterweight until it floats roughly level. Return it to the rest, set the numbered ring to zero without moving the weight itself, then dial in the tracking force the cartridge maker asks for. A stylus gauge makes a good confirmation and a poor substitute.

More force is not the cure for skipping, whatever you have read: too little lets the stylus mistrack and damage a groove, too much adds wear and loads the suspension past what it was built for. Set what the cartridge maker asks for. If you cannot reach that figure at all, the counterweight is wrong for the cartridge.

Anti-skate is where general advice does the most harm, because the mechanism genuinely differs from deck to deck. A dial to match to tracking force on one, a weight hanging on a thread on another, a magnetic arrangement with its own scale on a third, and on some nothing to turn at all. Use your deck's method, and treat a blank disc as the folk remedy it is.

Alignment is yours only where the cartridge both comes off and adjusts. Leave arm height, vertical tracking angle and azimuth alone unless your particular deck documents them as adjustments, because on most decks they simply are not.

the switch that decides everything downstream

More new turntables sound wrong for this one reason than for every adjustment above put together, and it has nothing to do with the arm.

A deck's output is one of two things. Either it is the raw cartridge signal, which is tiny and needs a phono stage before an amplifier can do anything with it, or it has already passed through a phono stage inside the deck and comes out at line level, ready for any ordinary input. Get that wrong one way and the music is a thin, distant whisper. Get it wrong the other way and you have two phono stages in series, which is loud, bloated and badly distorted.

Three arrangements exist. Some decks have no phono stage at all, so the lead has to go to an input marked PHONO: a Rega Planar 1, a Pro-Ject Debut Carbon EVO, a Technics SL-1300G. Some have one built in with a switch, which covers most of the Audio-Technica AT-LPX range, the Dual CS 329 and CS 418, and the Sony PS-LX3BT. And some have one that is always on and cannot be switched off at all, like the Rega Planar 1 Plus, which must therefore never meet a PHONO input.

Check the model rather than the family, because ranges are not consistent. The Audio-Technica AT-LP8X is the odd one out of its own range, with no built-in equaliser and no switch at all. Nor is the switch always where you would look: on a Pro-Ject A1 it sits underneath the platter, so you have to lift the platter off to discover what your turntable is currently doing.

The ground wire follows the same logic. Most decks have one and it goes to the matching terminal on whatever receives the signal. Some have none by design, and Rega are the obvious case, carrying the earth through the tonearm cable so there is nothing to attach and nothing missing. the first record is a test, not a celebration

Pick something clean and familiar, start at low volume and watch from the side rather than from above. The cartridge should clear the record, descend freely on the cue lever and sit in the groove without dragging or pulling sideways. If anything looks wrong, lift it straight off.

Then take the symptoms in order. No rotation means power, a transit lock still fitted or a belt off its pulley. Skipping means a dirty record or stylus, a deck that is not level, or a tracking force that has drifted, and one channel is usually a loose plug or a headshell lead on a cartridge you fitted yourself. Loud distortion sends you straight back to the phono switch. Hum sends you to the ground wire. Change one thing at a time, or you'll fix it without ever learning what it was.

A stylus wears out, and a worn one sounds dull and treats records badly. When the time comes, fit the one the cartridge maker names for that body, because a stylus that physically clips into it is not automatically one the maker supports. the two-minute checklist

Find out what the factory already set before touching a counterweight, and check whether the cartridge even comes off. Put the deck somewhere rigid and level, away from the speakers. Remove only the transit hardware the maker names. Balance and set tracking force only on arms that ask for it, use the cartridge maker's figure, and use your own deck's anti-skate mechanism rather than a general rule. Then settle the output question: PHONO into a phono input, LINE into a line input, and a built-in stage never into PHONO. Attach a ground wire only where both ends provide the terminals, and do not go hunting for one on a Rega.

So how do you know which setup jobs are really yours? By finding out what your deck already arrived knowing how to do. Proper setup is not about making the most adjustments, it is about making the right ones once, without risking the stylus or the records.
