how to connect a turntable to speakers
The plugs may fit, but a turntable cannot always feed a pair of speakers on its own. Here is the missing-box question made simple.
You have a turntable, a pair of speakers and two red and white plugs that look as though they ought to join the two. Sometimes they do. Sometimes you connect them and hear almost nothing, or you discover the speakers have only red and black terminals and nowhere for an RCA plug to go. The confusion comes from a simple fact that back panels hide rather well: a turntable signal is not ready to drive a speaker on its own.
The honest answer is that a turntable can connect straight to powered speakers when the right electronics are already built into the turntable or the speakers. Passive speakers always need an amplifier. Between the record groove and music in the room, four jobs must be done, and the whole puzzle becomes easy once you find where each one happens.
first, find the missing stages
The cartridge at the end of the tonearm produces a tiny signal, far quieter than the output from a streamer or CD player. A phono stage lifts that signal to line level and applies the equalisation records need. A volume control decides how loudly you listen, and a power amplifier supplies the current that finally moves the speaker drivers. Those four parts may live in four boxes, or manufacturers may tuck several of them into one.
That is why identical-looking RCA plugs can be deceptive. One turntable sends the raw cartridge signal and needs a socket marked PHONO. Another has its own phono stage and sends a normal line-level signal to AUX, LINE or CD. The plug fits in both cases, but the signal behind it is completely different. Each stage must appear once: leave the phono stage out and the music is whisper-quiet and thin; use two and it becomes loud, bloated and badly distorted.

the four connections that actually work
The traditional route is a turntable into an integrated amplifier with a PHONO input, then speaker cable from the amplifier to passive speakers. If the turntable has a PHONO/LINE switch, set it to PHONO, connect its RCA pair to the amplifier's PHONO input, and attach the separate ground wire where both manufacturers provide a terminal. The amplifier now supplies the phono stage, volume control and power, which is why this familiar three-part system works so neatly.
If the turntable has a built-in phono stage, set it to LINE and use any normal line input on the amplifier. AUX, LINE and CD are usually the same kind of input wearing different labels; the amplifier does not know or care that a turntable is feeding the socket once the signal is at line level. Avoid PHONO here, because the turntable has already done that job.
If neither machine contains a suitable phono stage, put a separate one between them. The chain becomes turntable to phono stage, phono stage to a line input on the amplifier, then amplifier to the passive speakers. Match MM or MC to the cartridge where the phono stage offers the choice, and remember that the output from the separate stage is now line level. Sending it into PHONO is the same doubling-up mistake in another form.
Powered or active speakers shorten the chain because their power amplification is already inside the cabinets. A turntable set to LINE can feed a line input on those speakers directly. A turntable set to PHONO needs either a PHONO input on the speakers or a separate phono stage before their line input. The speakers must also give you a safe, convenient volume control. If the only level setting is hidden around the back of one cabinet, the system may be technically compatible and irritating every day.
why passive speakers are different
Passive speakers have no amplifier inside. Their red and black terminals expect a power-amplified signal through speaker cable, not the delicate output of a cartridge and not even the line-level output of a phono stage. An RCA-to-bare-wire adapter changes the shape of the connection but replaces none of the missing electronics, rather like fitting a garden-hose connector to a drinking straw and expecting the water pressure to appear.
Therefore, a separate phono stage is not an alternative to an amplifier. It prepares the turntable signal, but it does not provide the power that passive speakers need. An integrated amplifier does both jobs only when it includes a PHONO input; otherwise the external phono stage still comes first. the switch that causes most mistakes
The small PHONO/LINE switch on the back of many modern turntables decides whether the built-in phono stage is bypassed or used. Set to PHONO, the output is quiet and expects a phono stage later. Set to LINE, the turntable has already raised and equalised the signal, so it belongs in AUX, LINE, CD or a powered speaker's analogue input.
The two classic symptoms tell you which mistake you have made. Music that is barely audible, thin and lacking bass usually means PHONO has gone into a line input without a phono stage. Music that is immediately too loud and heavily distorted usually means LINE has gone into PHONO. Lower the volume before moving the switch, because the change in level can be dramatic, and make only one change at a time.
Bluetooth can avoid the signal cable where a turntable transmits and the speakers receive, but it does not abolish the signal stages. The turntable still prepares the cartridge output internally before sending it, and the speakers still provide amplification. Confirm which device controls volume before the first record begins. Two Bluetooth logos are no help if both products are receivers waiting for someone else to transmit.
when it hums, plays quietly or says nothing
Hum is common around a turntable because its original signal is so small. If the deck supplies a separate ground lead, connect it only to the ground terminal named by the turntable, phono-stage or amplifier instructions. For silence, work along the chain rather than swapping everything at once. Is the stylus guard off and the stylus in the groove? Is the amplifier or powered speaker on the input you used? Is the turntable output set for that input? Are left and right RCA plugs fully home, and are passive speakers actually connected to an amplifier? For sound from only one side, swap left and right at one point at a time; when the fault changes side, you have crossed the part of the chain that contains it.
the two-minute checklist
Passive speakers need an amplifier, always. Powered speakers can take a turntable directly only when they receive a line-level signal or include their own compatible PHONO input. Set the turntable to PHONO when a phono stage comes next, and to LINE when it feeds AUX, LINE, CD or an ordinary powered-speaker input. Use one phono stage, not none and not two. Keep the first volume setting low, and connect a separate ground lead only where the equipment provides the proper terminals.
