active vs passive speakers: which should you choose?
One puts the amplifier inside the speakers, the other lets you choose it. The better system is whichever makes your sources and your room easier to live with.
Active speakers look like the modern, simple answer: two cabinets, fewer boxes and no amplifier to choose. Passive speakers look like traditional hi-fi: an amplifier in the middle, speaker cable across the room and more decisions before anything plays. The temptation is to call one convenient and the other serious, but that sells both rather short.
The real difference is not quality, age or even the number of cables. It is ownership of the system design. With active or powered speakers, the manufacturer chooses the amplification and puts it inside the speaker system. With passive speakers, you choose the amplifier and can change it independently. One route gives you a finished solution; the other gives you a set of parts. The better choice depends on whether you want simplicity now or freedom later, and on the sources you need to connect every day.
the difference hiding inside the cabinets
A passive speaker contains drivers and usually a passive crossover, but no power amplifier. It takes an already amplified signal through speaker cable, which means a turntable, streamer or television cannot normally connect to it directly. Those sources go into an integrated amplifier or receiver, and that central box selects the source, controls volume and drives the speakers.
Powered and active speakers contain amplification and therefore need mains power as well as music. Shops often use the two words as though they mean exactly the same thing. Strictly, a powered speaker can put an amplifier before an ordinary passive crossover, while a fully active design splits the bass and treble before amplification and gives each driver, or each frequency band, its own amplifier channel. That engineering distinction matters when you are comparing two designs, but it does not decide which pair will fit your life. The inputs, controls and physical connections do that.
where active speakers earn their keep
The great advantage is that the manufacturer knows the exact drivers, crossover and amplifier working together. In a properly active design, each amplifier sees a predictable load and handles only the frequencies intended for its driver. Digital processing can add protection, room adjustment and very precise crossover control. None of that guarantees a wonderful speaker, but it removes the guessing game of pairing a separate amplifier.
The practical gain can be larger still. A good active system may include streaming, a DAC, remote volume, television audio and several physical inputs. Put it on two stands, connect the source and you have a complete hi-fi without a rack of boxes. For a living room shared with people who do not want a lesson before playing music, that ease is not a lesser form of hi-fi; it is often the reason the system gets used.
However, read the back panel rather than the word active. A pair with Bluetooth and one analogue socket is delightfully simple until you add a television, turntable and games console. Some need mains at both cabinets; some put all the electronics in one speaker and run a proprietary cable to the other. Wireless nearly always means wireless music, not wireless power, and occasionally not even a wireless link between the speakers themselves.
where passive speakers still make more sense
Passive speakers keep the complicated electronics in an accessible central box. You can choose an amplifier with enough analogue inputs for older sources, HDMI for the television, a phono stage for vinyl and network streaming for everything else. If your needs change, the amplifier can change while the speakers stay exactly where they are. If the amplifier needs repair, the speaker remains a speaker rather than half of a temporarily unusable system.
That modularity is the enduring appeal. You can improve one part, reuse an amplifier you already own, or keep much-loved speakers while the digital world around them changes. The price of that freedom is compatibility. The amplifier must be comfortable with the speakers' impedance, sensitivity and the level you expect in your room. Passive speakers can also be easier to place where mains sockets are scarce. They need only speaker cable from the amplifier, while an active pair may ask for power on both sides of the room. On the other hand, a passive system puts another box and another remote somewhere in the middle. Simplicity is not a fixed property of either type; it depends on the room you put it in.
the source question decides more than the speaker question
Before comparing sound, write down what you will actually play. A streamer with volume control can feed many active speakers directly. A television works neatly when the speakers offer optical or HDMI ARC, though a stereo speaker may expect the television to output two-channel PCM. A laptop may want USB Audio. A passive system moves that entire socket hunt to the amplifier. That is often helpful when you own several sources, but wasteful when the only source is a streaming service. Conversely, buying sleek active speakers and then surrounding them with adapters, switch boxes and a separate volume controller defeats the simplicity you paid for. Count sources, inputs, mains leads and daily button presses before you count boxes in the product photograph.

which sounds better, and which lasts longer?
Neither category owns sound quality. Active design gives the manufacturer control of the whole electrical chain; passive design gives you control of the pairing. Drivers, cabinet, crossover, amplification, processing, placement and the room still decide what you hear. A poor active speaker remains poor despite its clever integration, and a mismatched passive system does not become musical because it has more boxes.
Compare complete systems rather than misleading halves. A passive speaker price excludes the amplifier, streamer and perhaps the DAC or phono stage. An active price may include all of them. Once the functions are equal, the apparent gulf often narrows.
Longevity is equally nuanced. Passive speakers can outlive several generations of source equipment because there is little inside to become digitally obsolete. Active speakers combine more functions, so one failure can remove more of the system, but firmware may also add features and the factory-matched amplification never needs replacing for fashion's sake. Ask which kind of ownership suits you, not which architecture wins forever.

Choose active or powered speakers when they have every input you need, a volume control you will enjoy using and sensible access to mains power. Include the cost and function of the amplifier when comparing systems, and do not assume either design sounds better before you hear the complete result.
